David Werdiger is the founder and Managing Director of Billing Bureau, a supplier of outsourced billing services for telecommunications companies based in Melbourne.

He completed a B.Sc. at Monash University (back in the days when Monash meant Clayton), majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. David then worked as a programmer, and then a quantitative analyst for McIntosh Securities (now Merrill Lynch) before establishing a software development company called ObjectiveWare, which we now know today as Billing Bureau.

From modest beginnings, Billing Bureau developed its first billing system in 1994, with only 2.5 employees including David as the principal architect and developer. These days however Billing Bureau has grown to over 30 employees and David now occupies a business development role. However, despite his new focus, David still sometimes lies awake at night and thinks about billing.

David is also a Director and Shareholder of Telecoms Buying Group, an aggregator of wholesale mobile airtime and content, Kiss Mobile, an MVNO, and VNO Solutions, an MVNE which provides a platform for the fast rollout of virtual telecommunications providers. David was a founding shareholder and Director of Telco in a Box, and divested his shareholding in mid-2005.

In his spare time, David is a professional voice artist, plays indoor and outdoor cricket, supports the mighty Richmond Tigers and is on the board of a couple of local not-for-profit organisations. And as if this site isn’t enough, David’s personal blog (for matters other than telco) can be found here.

Paul Smyth

Paul Smyth is the acting CEO at Billing Bureau, a company providing billing services within the telco industry. Paul commenced his career working within the customer services division of Telstra (then called Telecom). He worked his way up the ladder to take charge of Sales Operations and later Value Added Services at the national level. Many of his roles involved the implementation of major billing systems. Not content to confine his involvement to sales and marketing, Paul undertook a Bachelor of Engineering degree at Monash University, majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Armed with this qualification, Paul intended to match wits with the Engineers who dominated Telstra at the time (has anything changed?). Instead, he found himself promoted to the senior executive level before he graduated.

With an itch to practice software engineering and no role for such within Telstra, Paul jumped ship and started his own business. The design, coding and maintenance of telco billings systems, both domestic and international, dominated this 15 year venture. After a few years lecturing in IT subjects at the University of Melbourne and Monash University, Paul joined Billing Bureau to return to the domain of telco billing.

In his other life, Paul’s passions include cooking and Japanese culture.

Preparation of his favourite Japanese cuisine provides him with the best of both worlds!
